Kolkata district has 2,359 schools teaching 500,418 students, and 2,041 of those schools — 86.5% — are government-run. Girls outnumber boys, 258,552 to 241,866, giving a gender parity index of 1.069.
The infrastructure gap is not electricity or walls. 99.6% of schools have power and every one has a boundary wall and medical check-ups. But only 41.9% have a playground, 40.1% have internet, and just 31.4% have a computer lab. The basics arrived; the next tier largely has not.

Limitations worth knowing
UDISE+ is self-reported by schools, so facility counts record what an institution declared rather than what an inspection found — a school reporting a computer lab says nothing about whether the machines work. Enrolment figures were available for 2,106 of the 2,359 schools. Dropout rates and gross/net enrolment ratios are not published at district level in this release, which is why those sections are marked unavailable rather than estimated. The data covers Kolkata district only, not the wider metropolitan area where many students actually live.
