“141 wards, 141 different Kolkatas.”

Kolkata Ward-Wise Population Map

141 wards of Kolkata — Census 2011 demographics on an interactive map

Kolkata's 141 wards are nothing like each other. Ward 66 holds 98,024 people; ward 45 holds 8,394 — an elevenfold range inside one municipal boundary. Literacy runs from 96.6% in ward 96 to 65.5% in ward 49, a thirty-one point gap between neighbourhoods a short tram ride apart.

Schools are just as uneven: ward 58 has 44 of them, ward 9 has three. City-wide averages describe none of this, which is the reason this page exists.

About this data

What this page shows

An interactive choropleth of all 141 KMC wards, switchable across eight metrics — population, density, sex ratio, literacy, worker participation, scheduled caste and tribe share, school counts and student enrolment. Ward boundaries come from KMC's 2022 delineation, merged with Census 2011 Primary Census Abstract tables covering 4,496,694 residents, and UDISE+ school data covering 2,352 schools and 499,727 students. A second layer offers WorldPop 2025 modelled population estimates as a more current alternative.

Where the data comes from

Census of India 2011 ward-level PCA tables, KMC ward boundary files (2022), UDISE+ 2023–24 school profiles via OpenCity, and WorldPop gridded population estimates for 2025.

Limitations worth knowing

There is a boundary mismatch built into this map and it is worth being explicit about: the demographic figures are from 2011, while the boundaries are KMC's 2022 delineation. Where wards were redrawn between those dates, values are approximate. The 2025 WorldPop layer is modelled from satellite imagery and covariates rather than counted, so it estimates distribution rather than measuring it, and its totals will not reconcile with census figures. School counts are assigned to wards by the school's registered address, which is not necessarily where its students live.
